The Dangers of Fracking

  • What is fracking?

Fracking is injecting chemicals into the earth to increase the amount of gas and oil found.

Fracking is harming our environment and putting an end to this means not allowing major oil companies to take advantage of EPA laws and stop using harmful chemicals. According to David Letterman, the process in which the greedy oil and gas companies pump toxic chemicals into wells placed in the Earth (Letterman, 2013). Some people do believe fracking is helpful. For instance gas and oil companies believe fracking helps production of goods prosper faster and more efficiently.

  • What are the dangerous chemicals being used?

Oil and gas companies are not taking into consideration the many harmful effects they are causing due to fracking. A few of these chemicals being put in the ground are things like hydrochloric acid, methanol, hydro treated light petroleum. These are dangerous chemicals because when they are mixed with drinking water, this water cannot be used anymore. There are too many health risks for this water to be taken in. Lakes, rivers, and streams are being polluted with these chemicals, also our drinking water.

Fracking uses many harmful chemicals that are destroying local waters.

  • Proof of Affected Areas Due to Fracking

Delaware, Colorado, New Mexico, West Virginia, Pennsylvania are just a few states in the U.S. that have suffered from the oil companies using fracking to find oil. Colorado, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania are states that were GREATLY affected by fracking.

The state of Colorado is one of many states that have taken notice of the effect fracking has had on their environment.

  • Problems with Fracking

According to Rachel Ehrenberg, fracking leaks methane which is a potent greenhouse gas that is capable of destroying homes (Ehrenberg, 2012). Fracking puts chemicals into the earth which then leaks into our groundwater systems. Humans or any life for that matter, are able to drink this water. Also, many ecosystems are being damaged because this water is not clean anymore and it is hard for these animals to thrive.

  •  Steps to Recovery

The EPA should become more strict and hold to their standards with EVERYONE. The natural gas and oil companies should not be allowed to do whatever they want to and be sneaky about it. This is a serious problem and if not handled correctly soon, there could be some very serious dangers beginning to happen. Soon the many beautiful groundwater systems will become unusable and the life that lives inside them will not exist.

If fracking continues, beautiful groundwater like this one will not exist.
