So what exactly is fracking? Fracking is the process of drilling down into the earth before a high pressure water mixture is directed at the rock to release the gas inside. Water, sand, and chemicals are injected into the rock at high pressure which allows the gas to flow out to the head of the well. Fracking is ruining different parts of America and it there needs to be an end to it, or at least not as much of it. Some of the reasons fracking is bad include:
- Destroys the country
- It causes earthquakes
- Water contamination
Different parts of the U.S. that are being destroyed include:
- New York in the Hudson River Valley
- West Virginia
- New Mexico
Other parts of the U.S. are being destroyed, as well, but have not yet been confirmed as easily as these others. I would like to see this country I destroyed by the time I’m fifty and by the way fracking is going, it isn’t looking so good. Fracking is also a cause for the increase in earthquakes. Because of fracking, Oklahoma is more earthquake-prone than California. Between the 1990’s and 2008, Oklahoma only had 3 recorded earthquakes per year that registered at 3.0 or more on the Richter scale. In 2013 alone, though, they had 109 earthquakes, and by June of 2014, 238. If this isn’t a good enough reason to stop fracking, I don’t know what else is!
Fracking is also contaminating water supplies in many parts of the country because of the harmful chemicals they use that are not reclaimed. These chemicals include:
- Hydrochloric acid
Fracking has contaminated local water supplies 243 times in 22 counties in the state of Pennsylvania.
Fracking also causes droughts. It uses a lot of water. Not just a couple billion gallons, but around 72 trillion for all 500,00 wells! That’s a FRACK ton of water! Texas and California are experimenting droughts because of how much water the fracking wells use.
Do you still think fracking is okay? Well it’s not. It’s destroying our country whether you know it or not. It causes earthquakes, water contamination, and droughts. It needs to come to an end.
